WEST CHESTER DANCE WORKS

WEST CHESTER DANCE WORKS Reaching Communities Through Dance WEST CHESTER DANCE WORKS Signature Company WEST CHESTER DANCE WORKS: Performing Groups

2006/07 Season - Spring Performances

It was with great excitement that we welcomed our fifth annual Spring Concert and Luncheon. Despite many obstacles the year has been very positive and productive.

This West Chester Dance Works season was enriched with many expanded opportunities including DM Dance Machine participating in a workshop and performing at Temple University. Our Training/Signature Company shared a new work in progress based on the true story of a runaway slave’s use of the Underground Railroad in West Chester. The project entitled “Rachel Harris, One Woman Over the Line” was introduced as a lecture demonstration (including student participation) to the entire student body of Delaware’s Tower Hill School. Annointed Dance continues to be very active praising God in many different venues including participating as special guest at the Grace Baptist Church of Germantown’s inaugural praise dance concert in Philadelphia. The Junior Performers along with other participants continued our tradition of uplifting area residents who are shut-in with our holiday performance of “Scrooge Unplugged”.

These engagements are but a few that resulted from outreach pursuits providing each West Chester Dance Works performing group opportunities to emerge and flourish in an atmosphere conducive to their specific character.

With your continued support we will endeavor to continue exposing our dancers and community to unique experiences for the mutual growth of all.

With Gratitude In God’s Grace,

Diane Matthews, Artistic Director

West Chester Dance Works Mission

Dance through non-verbal communication leaves and imprint on the senses of our communities. It uplifts, motivates, inspires, encourages, and heals.  It opens the door for an exchange of ideas feelings and emotions regardless of ethnicity, socio-economic backgrounds, religion, race, or creed by finding a common bond or goal by which our society can come together and grow.

The West Chester Dance Works mission is to provide the community an opportunity to experience the art of dance with its diversity of ideas, feelings, and styles. We make a commitment through outreach programs and performances to display the various art forms and talents so as to enrich and expand the horizons within our community.

Diane Matthews founded West Chester Dance Works Companies in 1983. Her professional dance background includes being an original member of the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco) and was a featured soloist with the Philadelphia Civic Ballet.  Under her direction and guidance along with a dedicated staff and devoted volunteers Dance Works has flourished into a strong, viable and emerging company. Diane has set standards for the companies that are more than just artistic goals but are primary philosophies exhibited in her life and work.

The company encourages courtesy, respect, independent thinking and self-confidence.  We continue this pursuit of enrichment through our dance school, The Diane Matthews School of Dance Arts. The Dance School as well as Dance Works promises to promote through dance a healthy environment for the growth of children and adults alike.  We look forward to a future where our commitment to diversity, our promise of enhancement and our sharing for the passion of dance along with our desire for outreach will be a place of inclusion and refuge for all to expand their visions.
